CA Cares is the social side of CA Travelers, as soon as we started working with local guides we realized that paying well to each of them was not enough. The community of San José Calderas is in need of so many different things and we have compromised not only with our guides, but with the whole community.
At the beginning it was not easy but thanks to all our customers that have believed in us during these years, we have been able to continue working with the community!
In CA Travelers, we believe that the best tool to accomplish social development is through education and healthcare, and you will read this phrase a lot in the next updates we have as we are totally compromised to start helping the public middle school in this town and then go for more. We know that education and healthcare are the key for this community to improve their quality of life. As long as CA Travelers continue working, CA Cares will be taking care of the communities involved in any touristic activity we will perform. Thanks for your support!

In CA Travelers we believe that the best tool to accomplish social development is through education. That’s why since the beginning of this school year, we have hired 2 teachers to teach all kids in a middle school in San Jose Calderas.
Before this, the school was only able to afford 1 teacher to teach grade 7th, 8th, and 9th. He was also the school principal, the janitor and handyman. UNNACEPTABLE! We couldn’t let this happen so CA Travelers started searching for 2 prepared teachers that would accept the challenge of improving this school’s academic level.
Now with the support of CA Travelers, more kids go to school on a regular basis and engage in more activities at school. Also, by hiring extra teachers for the school, we reduced the pressure on both teachers and students and
give all students the most attentive care possible.
Our dream is to transform the middle school in San Jose Calderas one day! So remember, every time you purchase any of our services, you will be helping to maintain and create new projects in the community of San Jose Calderas.

Sex education and personal hygiene
We delivered the reusable period pads to all the girls and they LOVED them! The reason why we chose to teach them about reusable pads is that it saves the environment in a long run.
According to National Geographic, in 2018 alone, people in the U.S. bought 5.8 billion tampons, and over the course of a lifetime, a single menstruator will use somewhere between 5 and 15 thousand pads and tampons, the vast majority of which will wind up in landfills as plastic waste. Therefore, an al ternative option to save the planet is to switch to reusable products such as reusable pads, and menstruation cups. We introduced the girls to those options and they decided to choose reusable pads.
Our hope is that one person at a time, we can make a difference in the world.
The school is divided into 2 classrooms: our male teacher taught the boys; and our female teacher taught the girls. The topics of the class are family planning, consent, abuse, and menstruation. Our hope is to educate them about this topic so they will plan better, and prevent any unwanted situations.

Whiteboards
While our teachers dedicated themselves to teaching with passion, we realized that the blackboards were not in good condition and the size of these are not suitable for teaching classes. Our children deserve to have the best facilities to receive an education, so we took on the task of finishing the remodeling with some nice blackboards. 2.4 meter long blackboards!
Phase one is complete with this last detail, in 2023 we will do phase 2 which will bring many more benefits to the children and the community. We are forever grateful for the support you have provided by using our services and recommending CA Travelers. Thanks for your support!
Painting
The time to see a pretty face at school has come! Many walls have not only traces of mold, but also many layers of paint in poor condition and different colors that made the school look dirty, abandoned, gloomy and did not seem like a place where young people could concentrate on their studies or feel welcome.
After we got rid of the leaky and damp wall problem, we let it dry completely and we were ready to paint a nice color!
We have painted the whole school light blue, which is somewhat monotonous, but we have plans to make very beautiful murals to inspire the students. At the moment the important thing was to make the school look beautiful, clean and tidy. A worthy school for this community. We share these photos of the upgrades so you can witness the changes.

Computer lab and electrical repairs
It has been many years since the school had any useful computers, the computers were piled up, dusty and unusable. The teacher had the idea of teaching computer classes using keyboards drawn on cardboard so that the students would have an idea for when they had the opportunity to use a computer.
This was unacceptable and we were all heartbroken when we found out, so we made a big effort and managed to set up a computer lab with 10 computers so that everyone has the opportunity to learn how to use them, an indispensable tool for the future of these boys and girls, so one day they will get a good job and earn a better salary to improve their quality of life. Look how beautiful this computer room turned out!

The roof
Small changes help, but sometimes gigantic changes are needed for the good of the whole community. The Middle School had a serious problem with dampness in the ceiling, the school terrace was full of cracks that dampened the walls and we found mold on most of the surfaces of the classrooms, which could put the health of the students and the teaching staff in danger. In the same way, an alley in the back of the school accumulated humidity and mold from having garbage and mud for many years.
Every year in the rainy season large puddles of water accumulated, this damaged the structure of the school. The school is small, but it can still educate many generations and CA Travelers would be honored to fix the things that need to be fixed so that many more children can receive the education they deserve.
CA Travelers through CA Cares decided to repair the deck to get rid of the mold. Our kids can’t study in these conditions so structural repairs became our priority. We share the before and after photos for you to witness these wonderful changes!

We worked on FIXING THE TOILETS! When we visited the school the first time it looked abandoned. The facility have not been properly taking care of for years. We noticed there was one toilet working for the whole school, teachers and students.

They needed to carry a bucket of water to flush the toilet after each use and it wasn’t in the best condition we would like it to be. So our repairman fixed both toilets (boys and girls), they are both working now with an automatic
flush! No more bucket of water to flush the toilet anymore! Woohoo!

– Washing of water tank
– Painting on walls and adaptation of entrance door

We have worked hard to improve the conditions of the school and it is also very important to restore the perimeter fence that surrounds the school to prevent anyone from entering this institute and damaging the infrastructure and all the improvements that we have achieved so far and those that are yet to come.

The perimeter mesh was restored and not only was the old one changed, but a metal frame was placed in areas that were missing. It may be a very small detail, but we must take care to take care of what we have achieved so far, since the education of all the adolescents of San José Calderas depends on these changes. We are working hard for the education these young people deserve!

That is why since the beggining of March 2022 we started our English lessons program where we have an native English speaker teacher comming to our guides village twice a week to teach English to the children at the middleschool as a reforcement.
